Distribution of confirmed lynx signs of presence 2005-2007 in the Alps. (Lynx occurrences in adjacent ranges are not shown). The number of lynx estimated in all the Alps ranges from 80-130 (France: 15, Italy: 10-15, Switzerland: 50-80, Liechtenstein: 0-1, Germany: 0, Austria: 5-10, Slovenia: 4-8). |

Comment: From 2005 to 2007, a total of 1925 signs of lynx presence were collected in the frame of the SCALP surveys. For the monitoring of the lynx throughout the Alps, the collected data are classified in three categories: Category 1 (C1): “Hard facts”, verified and unchallenged observations such as dead lynx and clear photos of lynx. Category 2 (C2): Observations controlled and confirmed by a specialist such as killed livestock or wild prey, and lynx tracks or other field signs. Category 3 (C3): Unconfirmed observations of the category 2 (kills, tracks, other field signs too old or badly documented) and all observations such as direct observations and calls which by their nature cannot be verified. Thus, 22% of the collected signs were C1, 44% were C2, and 34% were C3 data (see Table). More than half of the presence signs came from Switzerland. While in the French and Italian Alps less signs of presence have been collected compared to the previous reporting period, in Austria and Slovenia slightly more signs of lynx presence were reported. For the first time since the reintroduction of lynx into the Alps a confirmed record was reported from Liechtenstein. |
