Golden Jackal Project 2025-2026
The arrival of the golden jackal: preparations for a low-conflict coexistence in Switzerland
The golden jackal has been increasingly spreading in Europe for several decades and has also been regularly detected in Switzerland since 2011/2012. We are still in the early phase of the spread, which offers a special opportunity to deal with possible challenges in the future. Experience from other countries shows that a purely reactive approach is often more difficult and challenging in the event of a conflict. This project allows an early engagement with a species that is new to Switzerland. The golden jackal migrates to Switzerland naturally. Here it is currently not listed as a huntable species in the Hunting Act and is therefore protected.

Goals
The project creates the basis for forward-looking and scientifically sound management of the golden jackal in Switzerland. By dealing with its spread at an early stage, ecological relationships can be better understood, and potential areas of conflict can be recognised early and targeted for management. With this approach, the project aims to help minimise conflict between humans, livestock farming and wild animals and to develop sustainable solutions in the long term.
- Identification of possible impacts and areas with conflict potential
- Development of a monitoring and reporting system for the golden jackal in Switzerland and examination of monitoring measures for sensible management of the golden jackal
- Information of interest groups and the public
Methods
The project is based on a combination of literature research, fieldwork and communication. Potential conflict is identified by systematically analysing specialized literature conducted in regions with established golden jackal populations. In Switzerland, two focus areas where the golden jackal could potentially settle have been selected to analyse the current species composition prior to its arrival. To this end, photo traps are currently deployed and will also inform us of the potential arrival of the golden jackal in these areas. In addition, we are testing the applicability of various monitoring methods such as species detection dogs and acoustic loggers. Furthermore, information events are being organised for interested parties and target-group-specific communication tools such as flyers and a comic about the species are being developed.
