Wildcat on the Plateau of Vaud and Fribourg

Having escaped extinction, the European wildcat is on the rise again in Switzerland. Although the vast majority of Swiss wildcats are found in the Jura, the species has recently colonised some new areas. The KORA Foundation conducts several surveys with camera traps on the situation of wildcats in the Swiss Central Plateau.

Longest known dispersal of wolf in Europe

M237 was born in the canton of Grisons, was radio-collared by the Office for Hunting and Fishing of the Canton of Grisons and migrated hundreds of kilometres east to the Hungarian-Slovakian border from June 2022 to March 2023. Thus, the canton of Grisons succeeded in documenting the longest dispersal of a wolf in Europe known so far.

Two Swiss lynx to strengthen the population in Italy

In the canton of Jura, two lynx were captured by KORA in cooperation with the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health FIWI and the responsible game warden, and were brought to Italy for release at the beginning of March. The purpose of the relocation is to prevent the extinction of lynx in the Dinaric mountains and the south-eastern Alps. Both lynx will be monitored by means of radio collars after their release.

F07 – the oldest female wolf in Switzerland

The life expectancy of free-ranging wolves is 12-13 years. F07, a female wolf living in Switzerland since 2011, was camera-trapped in January 2023, as reported by the canton of Graubünden. Her age is estimated at an astonishing 13-14 years. This makes her the oldest female wolf in the country. The story of F07 provides fascinating insights into the colonisation of wolves in Switzerland.
